With 3Dfx, you have to ask yourself if you want to own stock in the niche player (hardcore gaming), which I believe 3Dfx is safe. In the mainstream market for PC OEMs, they like to have 2D/3D combo cards, which is exactly what Intel is targeting with the i740. nVidia's RIVA 128 is currently dominant there. This fall, 3Dfx will try to penetrate that market with their Voodoo2-class "Banshee" chip, but it will be difficult.

Personally, I tend to avoid companies in niche markets over the long term. SGI is a niche player, for example. Reliable long term is next to impossible with these companies. They need to expand into the mainstream to become "big."

Anyway, just read the article. Of course I had to hide a lot of very important issues(especially technical stuff, API wars, etc.) since they don't appeal to the average reader. That is, I have lots of advanced research info that couldn't be included in a journalistic report. So let me know if you have any deeper questions.
