From Reuters-- Sun gain comes from Compaq loss

CHICAGO, March 10 (Reuters) - U.S. March Standard & Poor's 500 futures ended near record highs due in part to renewed buying interest in several key technology stocks, traders and analysts said.

Jeff Feeney, vice president at Salomon Smith Barney, said gains in both Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW - news) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT - news) helped catapult other stock sectors.

Sun Microsystems rebounded from a sharp drop Monday, after analysts said Sun is not likely experiencing the same problems as Compaq Computer Corp (CPQ - news) with its server business.

Salomon Smith Barney analyst John Jones raised his rating on Sun. ''We believe part of Compaq's server softness is due to the (Sun) 450's success,'' Jones said in a note to clients.

Hope Sunw holds firm and advances after today's pop. I'm holding some APR 50 calls that I brought before the recent decline.
