If you've followed the story of Dell Computer, you know that it has been a highly rewarding holding. As of Thanksgiving Day last year, when Goldman put out a special report on PC builders, Dell had racked up market gains of 175 times since 1990. So if you had put $10,000 in Dell at the start of that period you'd have had $1,750,000 last November. In the same period, the leading "indirect" seller, Compaq (NYSE: CPQ), rose 10 times. So $10,000 in Compaq for the same period was worth $100,000. Both firms have enviable records. But there are intriguing differences. For one, Compaq did not make Goldman's top 50 EVA list.
