CHINA IS WHERE IT'S AT FOR TV

Irdeto, the Dutch-based manufacturer of conditional access systems for pay-TV which belongs to M-Net-owner MHI (Myriad International Holdings), has set-up an office in Beijing, "to explore and develop the market for pay-media technology." As most industry analysts would confirm, China is the next big thing waiting to happen in terms of pay-TV, despite the economic downturn that has affected Asian markets over the last year. Irdeto says that there are currently more than 65 million cable TV homes in China - a mere blip compared with the huge number of homes owning TV sets, estimated at least at 240 million. Star-TV is for the time being the only foreign Pay-TV satcaster to beam into Chinese cable head-ends, from Hong Kong.
