EU COMMISSIONER GIVES THUMBS DOWN TO GERMAN DIGITAL ALLIANCE

EU monopolies and cartel commissioner Karl van Miert, told the press in an interview published in the German tabloid Bild am Sonntag that the digital alliance between Kirch and CLT-Ufa will not be able to go ahead as planned.

Asked if his office would sanction the merging of Premiere, Premiere Digital and DF1, Van Miert stated, "That would be totally out of the question. Such a merger would create an effective monopoly in pay-TV."

Van Miert also announced that the EU has begun investigations into European programming rights sales and has sent out a letter to all German channels requesting that they list all current and future rights to all purchased programmes. He has also asked Hollywood studios to list all sales to Europe. Van Miert pointed out that this was in their own interest, as it may prevent a future purchasing monopoly.
