Bill,

Merced will be in the hands of developers before the end of the year (this year). It is being designed by a very talented group of engineers at HP. It will be a great processor. But, Intel (who is manufacturing the Merced) doesn't have copper interconnect technology, yet. IBM should be able to attain higher clock speeds. Clock for clock, the Merced should be higher performance. I would guess that the G4 will be somewhat slower than the Merced at any point in time. Also, Microsoft will be spending so much time and effort porting MS Office to the Merced, that Office on the G4 will be released much later. What is a platform without applications?

Think where Apple would be if IBM and MOT had dropped the Power PC.

Pravin.
