Hi ya,

I can see by reading the thread this morning that somebody saved me from actually having to open my Bible to present the view I (really never, meaning wanted to do the work to hunt down the scriptures) wanted to post. Bob's post at #18017 pretty much says it the way I would have as far as offering the texts from which I would have wanted to do so. I think really the one verse which speaks to me the strongest is the verse (where and what verse and so forth I can't remember) that goes like, "I have not come to change the law, but to fulfill the law." I also think, had Christ not come, all who now claim a belief in Jesus Christ in one form or another wouldn't stand a chance in hell of ever making it to Heaven. The significance is also almost an irony. When Christ appeared even at the time of HIS birth, most rejected HIM even though they thought they were following the laws of God as set forth in the old testament. I think much the same thing is happening today. Many Christians, or so it seems to me, feel they are following Christ, but as you've pointed out and rightfully so I might add, they talk the talk, but they don't necessarily walk the walk. This gives Christianity a bad name and you can be sure (as I pointed out to purething most recently) I am amongst those who've brought more shame unto Christianity by my actions than glorified Christ name by the same means. Therefore there is no point in kidding myself into thinking I am a Christian. It is a juxtaposition.

There is a very good reason that we have a number of new faces on the thread as it was so tactfully pointed out. Because I took a discussion from this thread and took it to another. I did not, however, send out a general invitation. But if there are any among you (thread) who want to hammer me over it, knock yourself out.

I would also like to say, as a periodic reader and participant of this thread, that I am thus far pleased with the civility by all the responders thus far relating to this topic. It isn't perfect though and I believe this can be understood because none of us is either. And I am especially pleased, though not surprised, with the way you've kept the discussion flowing on points pertaining to facts or the perception thereof rather than letting people like me get in some kind of an uproar about something or other. I really had my doubts, but thus far I am pleasantly surprised.

Just so nobody misunderstands I consider Jane a trusted acquaintance. If that is going to cause a problem, I'm sorry to hear it. It would be nice if those we choose to ally ourselves with would like the people others ally themselves with, but unfortunately it just doesn't seem possible.

BTW, one of my favorite black and white films is "King's Row".

Stay well,

Mike

THE SMILE

She smiled at a sorrowful stranger.
The smile seemed to make him feel better.
He remembered past kindnesses of a friend
And wrote him a thank you letter.
The friend was so pleased with the thank you
That he left a large tip after lunch.
The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip,
Bet the whole thing on a hunch.
The next day she picked up her winnings,
And gave part to a man on the street.
The man on the street was grateful;
For two days he'd had nothing to eat.
After he finished his dinner,
He left for his small dingy room.
(He didn't know at that moment
that he might be facing his doom.)
On the way he picked up a shivering puppy
And took him home to get warm.
The puppy was very grateful
To be in out of the storm.
That night the house caught on fire.
The puppy barked the alarm.
He barked till he woke the whole household
And saved everybody from harm.
One of the boys that he rescued
Grew up to be President.
All this because of a simple smile
That hadn't cost a cent.
