From soep.com Mar 8/98 JACKET LOADING SIGNALS SABLE START OFFSHORE HALIFAX, NS _ The world's largest heavy lift vessel docked in Halifax harbour today to load two drilling jackets and pilings for installation at the Sable Offshore Energy Project Thebaud and Venture natural gas fields on the Scotian Shelf near Sable Island, 200 kilometers east of Nova Scotia. Saipem UK Limited's S7000 berthed at the dock adjoining the MM Industra/Brown & Root JV yard where the two jackets were fabricated. The size of two football fields, it is the largest vessel to come into this harbour. Sable Offshore Energy Incorporated General Manager John Brannan said the arrival of the S7000 is an important milestone in the life of the Sable natural gas development project. "We have anticipated this day for three years now," he said. "This really let's people know that the $3 billion Sable project is on its way. "We have just 21 months in which to bring the project on stream and have gas flowing to market in late 1999, " he said. Sixty-six Canadians including 50 Nova Scotians will join the vessel's crew in Halifax for the installation of the jackets at the Thebaud and Venture locations. This group includes both direct hires and subcontractor personnel from ORSI Inc. of Dartmouth,NS, Crosbie - Salamis Limited, St. John's, Newfoundland, Racal Pelagos of Enfield, NS, TJ Inspection Services of Dartmouth, NS, and Dominion Diving Ltd. of Dartmouth,NS. They will be with the ship while on location until early April and will return to Halifax by helicopter when the S7000 leaves for Norway. Eight Nova Scotians, four officers and four engineers,will remain with the ship as it continues its worldwide operations. The S7000 will refuel and provision while in Halifax. Saipem has spent more than $1.4 million in Nova Scotia to date and a further $500,000 elsewhere in Canada. The vessel will return to Nova Scotia waters in September for further SOEP installation work.
