CNet ratings CNet Recommends: MyExcite Channel TV-network execs assume we're too lazy to change the channel; they figure we'll take an hour of sludge just because it immediately follows 30 minutes of sugar (the "Seinfeld side effect"). Browser makers are cut from the same cloth and count us either too tired or too technologically dense to swap the default start page. Boy, are they wrong. We will change the default page--to My Excite Channel, the best place to start a Web journey. Although it's not perfect--the interface is a hash, and its search engine is weak--My Excite shines where it counts most. It'll let you personalize until you get dizzy, its breaking news and directory-based content are solid, and it loaded faster than any other site in our tests. It's the best of our six Web beginnings. It's not the leader by much, however. Trailing Excite by a whisker is My Yahoo. But Yahoo's messier interface and slightly slower download speed nudge it far enough into second place to prevent it from capturing our Editors' Choice award. Still, even these two top-rated pages won't make everyone happy. Another page we reviewed is worth at least a trial week or two. Microsoft Internet Start boasts a clean, easy-to-navigate interface, and though it can't match the best when it comes to content, its presentation sure simplifies surfing.
