Yet Another Positive Story---YAPS for short. Customers Rank PC Servers in GartnerGroup's Datapro Survey; New Report Examines Characteristics of PC Server Customers DELRAN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1998--A new worldwide survey from Datapro, a market research unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: GART), asked customers to rank their satisfaction with their PC Servers based on a number of factors. Dell Computer's PowerEdge posted the highest overall satisfaction rating with a 3.99 out of a possible 5.0. Hewlett-Packard customers ranked their NetServers second best with an overall rating of 3.88, followed by IBM's PC Server/Netfinity with a score of 3.84. As vendors implement more sophisticated features in their PC Servers in an effort to increase sales, Datapro's survey showed the most important purchasing criteria for PC Server customers are hardware reliability, followed by performance and price. Datapro surveyed 747 PC Server customers to find out how customers choose their PC Servers, what their plans are for their PC Servers, and how they feel about hot issues in the market. "PC Server customers are concerned about keeping their server applications available to their users, and they want high performance for a good price," said Jane Wright, senior industry analyst of Datapro's Enterprise Systems service. "Ease of ordering and installation, and the quality of the server management software provided by the vendor, were not as important to our respondents when they chose their PC Servers. "The most important features to PC Server customers in the next two years will be RAID, uninterruptible power supplies, hot pluggable disks, and redundant power supplies," said Ms. Wright. "The respondents overwhelmingly stated that they believe that PC Servers are already scalable enough and reliable enough to handle their business-critical applications. We found a variety of business applications are being run on PC Servers today, including database, groupware, transaction processing, and Internet applications." Datapro asked the respondents surveyed how they felt about the 1997 mergers between a number of PC vendors and PC Server vendors. Most believe the mergers will be beneficial to customers, mainly because it will become easier for products from the vendors to work together. Additional information obtained from Datapro's PC Server customer survey is available in a Datapro report titled "Worldwide User Ratings Survey of PC Servers." This survey was designed to provide an understanding of how PC Server customers feel about their vendors, their products, and related issues. Datapro surveyed PC Server customers in the Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific region in the last quarter of 1997. To purchase this report, please call 1-800-DATAPRO.
