Of course you know that under the freedom and liberties guaranteed under the Bill of Rights and Constitution, individuals have the right to do anything as long as it does not infringe upon the inviolable rights of other individuals. Oh, that must be the logic the Federal courts use when they forbid high school students from mentioning God or Christ in their commencement speeches. One California court even posted a Federal Marshal at the graduation ceremony. So much for individual rights. Is it really that painful to hear the words "God" and "Jesus" spoken by a high school student in his commencement speech? I guess it is. The First Amendment says that "Congress will make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free excercise thereof;..." It doesn't say anything about "Separation of Church and State", although the former Soviet Union's Constitution does say in Article 52, "The church in the USSR is separated from the state, and the school from the church". Let's see...how does a high school student making a speech equal Congress making a law respecting the establishment of religion (Methodist, Baptist, Congregational, Lutheran, Catholic, etc.). Oh I have it! Our stupid Supreme Court justices must have studied the Soviet Constitution, and thought it was a good idea. Furthermore, our Congress has become so wimpy that they forgot that NOWHERE in the US Constitution is the Supreme Court given sole authority to interpret the Constitution -- In fact, when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation , he did so in defiance of the Supreme Court, which had just ruled in the 1857 Dred Scott decision that Congress could not prohibit slavery and that slaves were only property, not persons eligible to receive any rights of a citizen. Lincoln ignored that absurdity and went ahead and declared freedom for the slaves. Too bad our government today lets the Supreme Court run amok with other idiotic decisions, without any challenge. Checks and balances? I guess not.
