U.S. stocks off highs but still in record terrain
NEW YORK, March 11 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were off their highs in mid-afternoon trading Wednesday but remained in record territory.
Market tracking company Birinyi Associates said a computer sell program brought the Dow industrials off their highs.

At 1401 EST/1901 GMT the Dow was up 14 points at 8657, off the day's high of 8693.44.

The S&P500 index was up 0.88 point at 1065.13.

The Nasdaq was up 3.09 points at 1751.60.

''The market is getting a little bit extended so it's not surprising to have a little profit-taking, and that's healthy,'' said Arnie Owen, managing director of capital markets at Cruttenden Roth.

Waste Management Inc (WMX - news) remained the most active issue on the Big Board, gaining four points to 29-3/16.

The company has agreed to merge with USA Waste Services Inc (UW - news) in a stock swap worth $13.5 billion. USA Waste was up 3-11/16 at 42-13/16 and was the third most active Big Board issue.

Some of the leading techs stocks were hit by profit-taking after the sector's sharp rebound this week, which helped push the Dow industrials and the S&P500 indices to record highs.

Dell Computer Corp (DELL - news) was off 1-3/16 at 64. Microsoft Corp (MSFT - news) shed 1-5/16 to 80-3/16.

Computer Learning (CLCX - news) slumped 8-1/4 to 19-3/8 following Tuesday's news that the Illinois Attorney General has filed suit against the national computer technology school for allegedly defrauding students.

The long bond was up 10/32 to yield 5.94 percent as it awaited more economic indicators to offer direction.
