Global Chip Sales Total $10.97 Billion in January

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- World semiconductor sales
reached $10.97 billion in January, climbing $304 million from January
1997 totals, the Semiconductor Industry Association reported today. The
2.9 percent year-to-year increase made January 1998 the second strongest
January of the 1990s.

Europe topped year-to-year growth among world markets, boosting sales
10.5 percent from January 1997. The Americas and Asia-Pacific markets
also had large sales gains from 1997, jumping 7.3 and 7.0 percent,
respectively. In Japan, however, sales continued to slump. January 1998
sales decreased 12.8 percent from January 1997 sales.

"January sales reflect the impact of Asia's economic malaise combined
with a seasonal pattern of sluggish sales. Historically, long-term sales
have grown despite short-term weaknesses," said SIA president George
Scalise.

For example, January sales in the Asia-Pacific decreased 6.5 percent
from December. Since 1990, however, sales in that region have increased
by an average of 26 percent per year.

All major markets showed sales declines from December to January. Sales
in the America's, European and Japanese markets dipped by 3 percent, 2.2
percent and 7 percent, respectively.

Data for the Global Sales Report was collected by World Semiconductor
Trade Statistics (WSTS), an organization that represents 70 companies.
The WSTS also prepares semiannual forecasts for the chip industry and
issues monthly reports on semiconductor sales by product and geographic
region for subscribers. A summary of the Global Sales Report is
attached.

The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry and has
represented U.S.-based manufacturers since 1977. SIA member companies
comprise 90 percent of U.S.-based semiconductor production and employ a
domestic workforce of more than 150,000 people.

Gottfried,
Do you know the date that you posted the request for predictions,
I will see if I can find the original post to validate my claim.
I still see the stock at $40 at the end of the year (after
split, etc) as your original post requested, now had you asked for
our predictions for the HIGH for '99 that would have been
more like $120. See, there is method to my madness, someone
protested and requested clarification, Thanks Marc!!

GM, a little addition to your analogy about the tree/winter/roots/
fruit/etc. Even a healthy tree needs to be pruned to clear away the
dead/unheathy wood in order to flourish and bear larger fruit!!!

Arborially,
BB

BB, no - I don't have your original post with your AMAT predictions. I think I should change your YE99 guess from 40 to 80 because no others took a future split into account. Is that OK with you?< No fair!! Big Bucks is hedging. <VVBBG>
