Yes, that's one possibility. Another possibility is that, perhaps, for the first time in history, chip prices have fallen. ;-)

Specifically, more chips are sold even though at a lower total price.

If more chips are sold, then at least 1 of several things has to happen:

Fab utilization goes up which leads to equipment orders;

Technology upgrades to permit shrinks which means equipment orders;

Capacity upgrades to produce the additional chips.

In any case, I agree with part of your point. It would be nice to see both unit and $ volume go up. It's not essential however for some of the leading edge equipment companies prosper.
