Well, I say. Do I hear another meat defamation suit? Such an attitude for the other white meat.

Court rules that pork is symbol of national disgust

JERUSALEM (AP) - Rejecting arguments that a city ban on pork sales amounted to religious coercion, a judge in the coastal community of Ashkelon declared that even nonobservant Jews find the meat repulsive.

"Over the course of history, pork has become a symbol of national repugnance for the Jewish people,'' Judge Yitzhak Yitzhak of the Ashkelon District Court said Tuesday.

The ruling will make 25 butcher shops in the city liable for criminal action if they continue to sell the meat, defense lawyer Alexander Shmerling said Wednesday. He said he will appeal the ruling.

"For a democratic country at the end of the 20th century to rule on what people can and cannot eat is intolerable,'' Shmerling said.

Jewish religious law strictly forbids the consumption of pork, since pigs are considered unclean animals. In Ashkelon, most of the people who buy and eat pork are recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union, said Shmerling.
