it is wrong to believe short interest indicates that a stock will move higher -- however, sometimes even the shorts, who do better work than the longs in general, will be wrong for reasons that may be obvious or not so clear. for example, waste management was an obvious fundamental short. the company admitted recently that it made virtually no money whatsoever since it went public, only fooling the typical analyst, etc. by overreporting "income" and pissing away any funds the street gave it. however, a gentlemen with a valuable (to whom?) currency just "bought" the company, and any fundamental short just got toasted. the hardest thing to factor into an investment position is the overriding stupidity of the average clown and also of the world in general. on the street money talks, even if it ain't money (in the short term at least -- which is when we pay our bills)
