So are you saying that Merced will have no applications ready for release?

Merced will be binary compatible with the x86 family.

As well, I think we should assume that NT will be ported to Merced very quickly, as NT is a multiplatform OS.

Merced is using a vlw (very long word) technology which transfers to the compiler the optimization of the execution of the code, by reordering it drastically and enabling some paralleling. This approach is known to be interesting, but you have to build very clever compilers. And I suspect it does affect the way you write the original code. And it does not work with all kind of programs So I guess to achieve significant gains in performance, you will need time. I doubt that this will happen next year. Even The year after
