UICC reportedly to get 9.6 bln twd insurance compensation

TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - Insurers have in principle agreed to pay United
Integrated Circuits Corp (UICC) 9.6 bln twd in compensation for a plant
damaged by fire in October 1997, the Commercial Times reported.
The newspaper reported the payment to UICC is the largest ever insurance
payment in Taiwan corporate history, surpassing the 5.7 bln twd paid to
Winbond Electronics Corp last year.
However, it reported that local insurers are unlikely to suffer
significantly from the UICC settlement as the majority of the subject
insurance was reinsured.
UICC is a unit of United Microelectronics Corp.
