Software decode?
It ain't pretty and they'll tire of it real quick, but it's doable.

1. Piecemeal upgrade to DVD, or replace a CD-ROM drive with upgradable technology.
2. There may be someone who actually wants to watch herky-jerky video with SoftDVD. ;-)
3. Maybe there will be new graphics boards with plug-in CUBE decoder boards.
4. Upgrade old DVD-ROM drive so you can read CD-R.

Mostly, I agree with you.

>why would anyone want to get a DVD drive without a decoder board?

I bought my Creative DVD drive to help produce and burn cds. Specifically to use it's ability to read cd-rw to
save wear and tear on the cd burner and save on cost of
wasting cd-r in design. I do not need the
decoder board as I'm working with mpeg1. At my office
we have deciced to purchase dvd rom in place of cd rom
when we can get the dvd for ~$125.
