Serge:

I short uncovered. I don't dismiss calls/puts as useful
hedges, but my trading is very short term and for those
stocks without options, the only hedge strategy I tend
to employ is simply to box my position...especially when
the position looks like it'll move against me, or when I
haven't a clue as to what the market looks like it'll do.
CA is great example. I shorted at 5.50, which turned out
to be much to early in this current bull move. I went long
on CA in another account at 5.45, and actually sold that
long position this afternoon.

I short naked. I look for froth in a stock. Example: keep an eye on the trading of WPT-Alberta. The froth is there. It will probably run for a few more days...and then....I tend to short only half positions at first. This gives me staying power in case the stock keeps going. It limits your loss, and gain. I also trade out of positions faster if it is showing signs of strength. This way I can trade my way out of a mess. Remember the "drool factor"; The more they drool over the prospects of a stock, the more $$$ that is at stake on a downturn. Saliva is very slippery!
