From the Canberra Times...(Australia!) 3/10/98 A BEEFY STEROID-FED, MIND-BENDING EXPERIENCE Battlezone Publisher: Activision Category: Action Classification: G Players: One/Multi Available: This Month Price: About $89 System Requirements: Pentium 120 or higher; Windows 95; 16MB RAM; 130MB hard drive space; 2x CD ROM drive; Sound and Video card; mouse; 3Dfx support available Synopsis: The name Battlezone should ring a bell. Activision has fed this 1980s Atari arcade classic a diet of steroids and it is now a beefy 3D multiplayer first- person combat- action strategy game. In the 1960s at the height of the Cold War, you are the commander of more than 30 units - tanks, infantry and mobile assault turrets. Build bases, deploy forces, manage resources and build your empire. Graphics: With a 3D accelerator, the cockpits and navigation maps look sensational. The terrain of the seven different planets and moons looks like a cross between Mechwarrior and Interstate '76. Those without the latest hardware can adjust the graphic and resolution settings. However, if you're the jealous type, don't look at the screen shots. 3D Support: ; Normal Interface: The installation interface of Battlezone is easy to follow and quite entertaining. Similar to that of Quake 2, Battlezone uses some nice graphics and sounds. Gameplay: Once you're familiar with the controls, prepare for a mind-bending experience. Activision has merged first-person action with strategy gaming in one package. In the heat of battle, you still have full control of your units and troops. You can even continue to build factories, create units, hunt for resources and create environmental disasters such as earthquakes. Sound: It is hard to recall the quality of the sound in a game when you are concentrating on the gameplay so much. All the booms, crashes and thuds are what you would expect. The sound effects complement the game nicely. Overall: Several games have attempted to match first-person action with strategy gaming over the years. Battlezone is the latest, and possibly the greatest.
