Barry, Here's your comet story.drudgereport.com XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX TUE MAR 10 1998 22:02 EST XXXXX MSNBC: COMET STREAKING TOWARDS EARTH! There are late reports tonight that a massive comet is believed to be on a direct collision course with planet Earth! MSNBC is reporting exclusively that the U.S. Government has been secretly preparing for a possible comet/Earth collision for more than a year. MSNBC pleaded with stunned viewers not to panic -- assuring that there is a course of action well under way inside of the highest offices in the land. The Pentagon has been secretly planning a joint venture with Russian military officials, MSNBC revealed, with plans to transport a team of multi-national experts via space shuttle and space station to the comet. The team will drill large holes into it, fill them with nuclear warheads and detonate the comet before it can reach the Earth. President Beck is preparing to address the world shortly on this very serious and developing situation. President Beck? Cut! Let's try that again. This time with more emotion. ---- Here we go again. The DRUDGE REPORT has been briefed on the details of a new movie now set for release from PARAMOUNT/DREAMWORKS -- a movie that features the freshman all-news cable channel MSNBC acting out phony reports of a catastrophic comet hit with the third rock from the sun! In the Steven Spielberg production DEEP IMPACT, due for release May 8, the all-news cable channel plays a key role in the storytelling. Recalling the ethical nightmares of the Summer of 1997, when news outlet CNN acted out news in more than a half a dozen films in a twisted attempt to product place the channel -- CNN reported dinosaurs being returned to an island; the crash of Air Force One, with the president supposedly aboard; the discovery of life intelligence in a remote galaxy, more -- MSNBC's presence in DEEP IMPACT is being described as impressive. "The plethora of blatant MSNBC logos & plugs throughout the film bordered on hysterical," notes a viewer of a DEEP IMPACT test screening last week at the PARAMOUNT lot in Hollywood. "If I were to guess, I would say that there were more than 30 logos & plugs throughout the 2 hr. film." A change in NBC policy? After all, it was just last year that a NBC spokesman took the high road during the CNN movie mess. When asked if NBC would loan talent and network resources for use in Hollywood films, NBC spokesman Julia Moffett told a reporter: "We don't feel it's wise to create a blurring of the lines." It is not clear what changed NBC's mind, but MSNBC's role in DEEP IMPACT is being described as not only reoccurring -- but pivotal. The movie casts actress Tea Leoni as a reporter for MSNBC. It is reporter Leoni who first uncovers what she believes to be a White House scandal -- later learning it really a super-secret White House plan to stop the comet's collision! It's all about breaking news with INDUSTRIAL LIGHT AND MAGIC cranking the effects. At one point New York City is completely destroyed. [Poor Godzilla, he had hoped to trash the town later in the Spring.] There is one scene described as taking place in Virginia Beach, where the asteroid hits the water causing a massive tidal wave which ends up killing everyone trying to evacuate. [Going to be a long night, Brian Williams.] MSNBC role in the film will once again raise ethical issues surrounding the blurring of news reporting and fiction -- about the marketing of a business that claims a public trust. DEEP IMPACT is inspired by the 1951 George Pal film, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE. He could hardly envision then that the real collision would actually end up being just another media burst: When serious news outlets sold their face for the close-up in a Spielberg. X X X X X
