Oh, pooh. No statement at all on the Ancient Mystery, which, as always, seems to remain a mystery, and suddenly everyone plays dumb and acts like they don't even get it. Oh, did you see "The Usual Suspects?" Great movie. One of my favorite actors, Kevin Spacey. Academy award stuff, the whole movie. One of the best lines in movie history delivered by Spacey: "The cleverest thing the devil ever did was convince people he doesn't exist." But I digress. Whatever brought up the movie, I don't know. Back to the pillar of salt thing you asked innocently enough on askgod. I believe you deserve an answer, Gypsy. Actually I'm in a great mood right now, and must keep the hidden humor at a minimum, give you the answer and leave SI for the real world for awhile. I will quickly skip through the archeological explanations, getting to the salt. In 1924 Dr. W.F. Albright and Kyle directint a jioint expedition of the American Schools, found five oases at the south end of the Dead sea, and on a plain 500 ft. up,....evidently a high place for religious festivities...great quantities of potsherds, flints and other remains of ...2500 to 2000 b,c, period of time. blah blah blah it continues with other facts.. Don't go away now. It gets better. Evidence the activities ended abruptly at 2000 b.c. More about archelogists agreeing Sodom and Gohmorrah was buried at the site of these oases, a ways from them (obviously they wouldn't have been stupid enough to build OVER them, now would they? They would have covered up the source of their water.) Anyway. Check it out. I don't have time to type all this. But now for the salt thing. Salt is "brimstone" of Gen 19:24. Under Mt. Usdom (at the S. end of the Dead Sea, known now to be the city of infamy buried deep in dry "slime" there is a stratum of salt 150 ft thick, and above it a stratum of Marl, whatever that is, mingled with free sulphur, and that at the proper time, they believe God, or the aethiest believe "nature" caused the gases to mingle...salt and sulphur were then thrown red hot into the air, so it literally rained fire and salt from heaven. ..."Lot's wife was encrusted in salt. There are many pillars of salt at the south end of the Dead Sea, which have borne the name of "Lot's Wife". Indeed everything about the region seems to dovetail exactly with the Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorahh." End of story. But you don't have to believe it if you don't want to. After all, as any good pagan swears, the Bible is all made up.
