I have actually eked out a profit both shorting and buying puts on the turkey during it's rise. Shorting to make any significant dough, though, requires either a heck of a lot of luck or a lot of money and there is significant risk. Unless you can open a position in the puts of at least 10 contracts or so -- you almost have to have a collapse in the stock to make good money. A spread will allow me to open a position closer to the money, with more leverage, for the same amount of risk, but lowering my profit potential. This seems like an OK tradeoff to me.
