You should also factor in that Compaq will probably sell off parts of DEC.

Satyr... They show cash at:

1997 DEC
6.4 bil CPQ and 1.3 bil DEC - 7.3 bil total

After first quarter.? No gain on losses carried forward from
DEC? When can they consolidate statements?

Mason will reduce A/R for DEC. A/R DEC - 3.2 bil (Dec.97).

4.5 bil for DEC and 2.5* bil for stock might not seem wise in
this environment.

*(I believe someone suggested 2.5 bil stock re-purchase)

I am skeptical for any help to the stock price from that direction.
I am missing something?

I am long CPQ, But your point is well taken. With so many millions of shares of CPQ traded daily, purchase by CPQ might not make a dent in the price upwards. However, don't you think it will have some psychological value as it shows management's confidence in CPQ? What do you think?
