Charts combine close trades, so the volume seems to spike.

To see every single trade for free, I use Internet trader, a freeware program that links to a delayed broadcast server. It works well, but real-time would be great ... no one offers such for free that I am aware of. It would be a nice add-on to SI ... :^)

I run Internet trader (IT) in one window and can see every trade as it scrolls with time-stamp, size, and price. Also, a chart is drawn automatically indicating direction, and the bid/ask changes can be tracked. It is really useful in timing your orders. With DATEK open in a second window I can capture pretty close to the trade I want, although I have to say I miss a few where I place a limit order at bid and have to cancel it when I see the delayed bid price has moved up. With real-time numbers, I'd be even happier. Yahoo's quotes and charts are not refreshed often enough. Yesterday I noticed they were 10 minutes behind even the delayed "IT" feeds I get, making Yahoo's quotes "obsolete" and mostly useless for trading.
