News snips from Offshore Data:Noble Drilling is expected to sign a five-year contract soon for the semi NOBLE HOMER FERRINGTON. The ex-Russian-owned unit is undergoing a $40 million outfitting/upgrade at TDI-Halter yard in Sabine Pass, Texas. Work is expected to be completed around September 1999. This is the old Shelf IV. If I hear "soon" one more time.... Be a good Dog and close the deal.FAEROE ISLANDS: A group of 23 oil and gas companies entered into an agreement to conduct an environmental assessment of the area around the Faeroe Islands in the North Atlantic in preparation for the Faeroes' upcoming first licensing round. The assessment, called GEM, will include geotechnical and environmental studies. Oil companies that signed the agreement include Esso, Fina, Lasmo, Conoco, Arco, Deminex, Marathon, Mobil, Norsk Hydro, Phillips, Saga, Shell, Statoil and Texaco. Imagine that: oil companies are still looking for new fields. Don't they know the price of oil is going down?AUSTRALIA: Seven new exploration permits were awarded offshore Australia in the Timor Sea. The awards include the following: Area NT97-1, a consortium led by Santos Offshore Pty. Ltd; Area NT97-2, consortium led by Shell Development (Australia) Pty. Ltd; Area NT97-3, consortium led by Oryx NW Shelf Australia Energy Pty. Ltd; Area AC97-1, consortium led by Cultus Timor Sea Ltd; Area AC97-2, Flare Petroleum NL; Area AC97-3, consortia led by Mosaic Oil NL; and Area AC97-4, consortia led by Arc Energy NL. The companies have committed to spend an estimated $88 million to drill at least 13 exploratory wells during the next six years. The three areas off Northern Territory are southeast of the Australia-Indonesia Timor Gap Zone of Cooperation. The four areas in the Territory of Ashmore and Cartier Islands are in the vicinity of the Jabiru and Challis oil fields. I'm still trying to find out who has rigs in the area and the water depth. Someone here should know, right?
