Fred, Article...Prepare For War Warns Digital's Bunker...

March 12, 1998

AUSTRALIA, SYDNEY, Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : It is possible that the Compaq-Digital merger will result in a minor war against chip-maker Intel. This was one of the many messages that Ron Bunker, managing director of Digital South Pacific gave in a report to the press yesterday. Compaq may be having slight problems with its financial figures this quarter and perhaps next, but Bunker is very up-beat about the Compaq-Digital merger.

The Intel tussle may come over the Alpha chip. Bunker confirmed that Mitsubishi has dropped its license but that Samsung is very seriously working on a low-end Alpha chip which might challenge Intel in low-end workstations and high-end PCs.

Meanwhile, Digital is working on the high-end 64 bit Alpha chip which could be seen to be a direct competitor of the future Intel Merced offering. Because the takeover of Digital by Compaq is in the legally required "quiet period", he was unable to talk about what will happen after the takeover but he thought it would be a quiet transition. He said that there is an overlap of perhaps 15 to 20 percent between Compaq and Digital "in the Intel space. There is going to be some rationalization in the coming months. "

Don't you have the funniest feeling this Bunker never figured this would get broadcast to the world via this medium? Like two football teams the last thing you would want to do is fire up the opposing club. :-)
