Thursday, March 12, 1998Market Close: Internet stocks slip but bulls still in charge By Larry Barrett, ZD Inter@ctive Investor March 11, 1998 4:50pm Inter@ctive Week Online Internet stocks finally cooled off Wednesday but it wasn't enough to hold back any of the major market indices as the Dow surged to yet another high, up 32.63 points to 8675.75. The NASDAQ composite managed to pick up 8.29 points to 1756.80. PC stocks were mixed as Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) nudged up 19 cents to $25.56 and Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) lost $1.19 to $64. Gateway 2000 Inc. (GTW) rose 31 cents per share to $38.06 and Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) shot up $2.06 per share to $26.13. Intel Corp. (INTC) gained 38 cents to $75.88 while Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) fell 38 cents to $21.38. IBM Corp. (IBM) rallied up $1.69 per share to close at $99.19. Among major networking issues, Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) grabbed $1.25 per share to $62.63; 3Com Corp. (COMS) picked up 42 cents to $35.19; Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND) gained 25 cents to $35.19 and Bay Networks Inc. (BAY) fell 81 cents per share to $28. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) lost 81 cents to $80.69. Oracle Corp. (ORCL) and Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW) gained 94 cents and 81 cents per share, respectively. Netscape Communications Corp. (NSCP) inched up 19 cents per share to $19.50. Internet stocks were battered Wednesday after unchecked growth in the past three weeks. Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) plummeted $3.25 per share to $84.25 while Excite Inc. (XCIT) and Lycos Inc. (LCOS) dipped $4.88 per share and $3.06 per share, respectively. America Online Inc. (AOL) picked up 94 cents per share to $123.94. "Search engine stocks have had a really good year and I think today was just a little bit of profit taking," said David Readerman, an analyst at NationsBanc Montgomery Securities. "This recent lift in search engine companies and electronic commerce companies shows that the movement to lower-priced PCs will stimulate more demand for Internet services." Disk drive stocks made a strong run also as Seagate Technology Inc. (SEG), Quantum Corp. (QNTM) and Western Digital Corp. (WDC) all made substantial gains. Source: Inter@ctive Week Online
