Stitch, ***Off Topic*** Stock Selection---
This poster named Berney came up with a method of stock selection, and he describes the method in apparently intelligent/sensible words.
From the thread heading,
Subject 19528
>>Bernard F. ("Berney") O'Rourke is a CPA and financial planner. Berney uses both fundamental and technical analysis. The extent of Berney's research into what has worked in Value Investing makes most other researchers seem lazy by comparison.<<

But if you look at the results of his preliminary stock screen, you should begin to seriously doubt the value of his approach.
Supposedly, he is taking the entire market and trying to decide which stocks to own. Then, using the first screen of 'Buy and Hold With A Twist', he comes up with 11 possibilities out of 7600+ stocks that Morningstar Stocktools covers.

The possibilities are:
CON----eliminated because it has already agreed to a takeover. CON is a home builder.
ATRO electronic instr. & controls
BSC broker
DRC broker
JOB staffing services (temporary help)
JEF broker
MER broker
RJF broker
ROST discount retail stores
SIF aerospace components
TNL electronic instr. & controls

Look at the results of his first screen, and what pops into your head? This guy might have read Graham's The Intelligent Investor, and might be trying to apply what he read, but the guy didn't understand what he read, even though the book is famous for its simplicity and clarity.

Diversification is one of the major points that Graham was pushing, but this best-possibilities-selection-list is almost entirely made up of brokers.

This is someone who is trying to show how intelligent he is, but what he's really showing is something else.

Regards,

Larry

PS: I'm not saying the stocks on his list are necessarily bad, because I have BSC, CON and MER, which are on his list. What I am saying is that the guy is pretending to be intelligent, and I have serious doubts about how much he really knows. Or maybe he knows a lot, but doesn't understand much of it.

PPS: He copied the screening method directly from The Intelligent Investor, but the way he's applying it is questionable.
