Valueman, my knee jerk reaction to mother Intel getting into internet delivery via satellite is this: Bill Gates and Andy Grove are so pis*ed off at the telcos that they are willing to spend whatever it takes to get bandwidth to the home. They have zero faith in the responsiveness and/or competency of the RBOCs to get the job done so they are damn well going to do it themselves. I think both INTC and MSFT are investing as technology agnostics and don't give a flying fig if b/w to the home winds up coming in from birds, cable modem, xDSL (light , heavy, or medium), Web TV's, fiber optic, or two tin cans and a string. The telcos failure to deliver is costing them money and that, as Zorba the Greek, once said is a failure that they they will not forgive. Andy's machines are taking a hit and Bill doesn't have any new software releases that even vaguely resemble a compelling reason to buy: Wintel has lost its value proposition, at least temporarily, and these guys are not willing to sit around and watch the grass grow waiting to get it back. The internet IS that value proposition except for the tiny little fact that it is still a pain in the butt to use primarily because it is so agonizingly slow, I have no doubt that five years from now we will look back on the current state of the net and say: can you believe the crap we used to go through to get on the web? I wish I were smart enough to figure out what Mr. Schwartz intends to do about all this, and I'd give my eye teeth to know why Bill and Andy didn't hop on a plane and go to New York and ask Bernie to handle it. But hopefully I'm not dumb enough to presume that BS has got some mighty big hole cards left to play. Regards, Mike Doyle
