ON CALCULATING INTRA-DAY VOLUME BY HAND

(mid-day volume) divided by (# of hours from open to current)then multiply by (6 hours) equals (estimate of what the daily volume will be if trading remains consistent). This will give you a feel as to whether or not volume is high for the current time. Also, if you divide average daily volume by six, it will tell you what average hourly volume is, and you can compare that to the first part of the above calculation (before multiplying by 6 hours).

Also the intra-day graphs also, usually, have a volume bar graph at the bottom, which will show you spikes in volume.
