Nevin, Superb post!...We have long been discussing the VERY positive effect on DPMI of the increasing chip complexity. Having spoken almost glibly about the subject so many times, it is somewhat of a shock to get some apparently hard numbers on the revenue per photomask-- numbers which exceed by far my previous understanding of the dollar value (projected) for future photomask.
Now, can we take these numbers still further?? Your article gives us an increase in photomask price from $21,000 to $47,000 as the feature size goes from .25u to .18u. Could one assume a comparable jump (say to $90,000), as feature size goes to .13u? I use this last target because DPMI is installing equipment in it's Gresham (Oregon) plant capable of going to .13u, once LSI (and perhaps INTC?) are prepared to go to that level.
Most important, your article re-emphasizes the advantage of investing in the (less-competitive) photomask sub-sector in order to capitalize on the expected semiconductor growth... Doesn't that hit you as a much less risky route than trying to guess the semi winners?
