If Dr. Johnson would have touched the samples, then it would have broken the chain of custody on these samples. They were in fact shipped from CMRI directly to Ledoux and RMG under chain of custody.

Insofar as the standard lead fire assay let me go into a bit of detail to answer your next question. Preparation of material previous to a lead fire assay is a separate process. The material can be dried, ground, roasted, etc. The lead fire assay consists of four elements - the sample, which is normally 30 grams, the lead oxide which will convert into lead and collect the gold after heat is applied, the reducing agent, and the fluxes. Depending on the nature of the ore, there will be certain reducing agents and fluxes that are better suited to the material than others. The art of the standard lead fire assay is finding those reducing agents and fluxes and the amounts thereof that will best bring out what is really in the sample. If you add a preparation process that makes it easier for the fire assay to work on, then you have in effect liberated the precious metals from inhibiting elements.

Dr. Johnson could have instructed the lab saying - use so much of this reducing agent along with "x" amount of a certain flux and fire it up to a certain temperature.
