Sunday March 22, 7:00 pm Eastern Time LSI Logic to introduce new chip technology SAN FRANCISCO, March 22 (Reuters) - LSI Logic Corp. said it plans to introduce a new chip technology Monday that will combine onto one chip all the system functions needed to create future communications, computer and consumer products. The technology, called G12, will be unveiled Monday at an industry conference by the Milpitas, Calif.-based chip maker. LSI said the G12 technology will have 223 million transistors on a single chip, and will include functions such as mixed signal, logic, embedded memory and radio frequency components on a single chip. Prototype designs of the G12 technology will be produced in the fourth quarter of 1998, the company said, and initial production will start in the second quarter of 1999. LSI, which is a leader in system-on-a-chip technology to get more functions onto one device, has products in myriad devices, ranging from Sony Corp.'s (NYSE:SNE - news; 6758.T) Sony Playstation gaming system to cellular phones to digital cameras. The company said the new G12 technology could be the core of products like a consumer electronics device that combines three to four functions in one system -- such as a set top box and a DVD (digital video disk) player and a VCR, all in one device. ''We just introduced a cellular phone on a single chip and I think a generation ago that would not have been possible,'' Wilf Corrigan, LSI chairman and chief executive said, referring to the company's GSM chip for the digital mobile phone market. The new G12 technology will let companies design products ''never before possible'' Corrigan said. ''You can integrate three to four things into one system.'' --
