Micron CEO Blames Dumping On 'Irresponsible' Asian Fab Expansion
(4:30 p.m. EST, 3/12/98)
By Jack Robertson

Steve Appleton, chairman of Micron Technology Inc., on Thursday said that during the annual meeting of the World Semiconductor Council he intends to discuss what he said is continued Asian DRAM fab expansion in the face of global overcapacity.

He said in an interview that irresponsible fab expansion "is at the heart of DRAM dumping from South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan." He added that the WSC is an appropriate forum to challenge the unbridled Asian ramp-up, "although I don't expect to be very popular there."

The WSC meeting, which this year is being held April 15 in Carlsbad, Calif., is the annual convening of chip industries from the United States, Japan, Europe, and South Korea. The organization, an industry sounding board, was established in 1996 under the U.S.-Japan Industry Semiconductor Agreement.

Stephen, tough to say how the market will trade Friday, I look for an up opening but a sell off later in the day. I covered some profitable short positions in MU today, but took another at 34 9/16. MU is destined to drop, but when? Its easier to trade in and out of the stock during the day, its in a pretty narrow trading range.(also short AMD and MOT at the close today)

Good Luck
