Can anyone tell me what's the latest with the USCS contract? It sounds exciting.

As a refresher, here's the article:

USCS International Announces Contract with CAI Wireless

Four-Year DDP/SQL Customer Management and Billing System Agreement To Be Used In Connection With Operator's Provision of Digital Cable TV And Internet Services

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 1997-- USCS International Inc. (NASDAQ:USCS - news) today announced that its CableData Inc. subsidiary and CAI Wireless Systems Inc. [Nasdaq:CAWS - news] have signed a contract to provide CableData's industry-leading DDP/SQL customer management and billing system.

The four-year agreement represents the first DDP/SQL wireless (MMDS) implementation to use CableData's new interface to digital set-top converters. CableData's custom-designed digital interface combines the power of the DDP/SQL system with the enhanced channel capacity and service offerings of digital technology.

The solution should permit users flexible options to offer subscribers real-time, interactive access to revenue-generating services such as impulse Pay-Per-View (PPV), Video-On-Demand (VOD), Internet access, and more.

''It's gratifying that CAI Wireless has acknowledged our DDP/SQL system as the premier customer management and billing solution, and that they have selected us to support the start up of their operation,'' said Bob McKenzie, vice president marketing for CableData.

''CAI has an exciting future ahead, and we are proud to be enabling the growth of their customer base and the expansion of their service offerings. As CableData embarks on this undertaking, we look ahead to many years of a prosperous, mutually-beneficial relationship.''

DDP/SQL is the leading subscriber management system providing customer care and billing solutions to the North American cable television market. A robust, feature-rich turnkey solution, DDP/SQL supports medium- to high-volume systems whose offerings focus on traditional cable, including subscription and pay-television services.

The DDP/SQL customer management system utilizes a relational database and open-systems technology, a range of parameter-driven options, plus ad hoc query and reporting tools to elevate the billing system to a strategic management tool. DDP/SQL integrates the functions of cable operators' day-to-day operations and, more importantly, empowers them to tap new revenue streams and succeed in an increasingly competitive environment.

CableData Inc. is a leading provider of customer care and open billing solutions to communications industries worldwide and is a USCS International company. USCS International offers customer management software and statement processing solutions to the global communications marketplace.

In the United States, the company currently provides its services for 58 percent of all cable television subscribers, 39 percent of all cellular telephone subscribers and 11 percent of all landline telephone subscribers.

CAI plans satellite service

By MIKE DICKINSON
Rochester Business Journal

A company that provides a cable TV alternative and high-speed Internet service here is looking to expand with satellite service.

CAI Data Systems Inc., a subsidiary of CAI Wireless Systems Inc., this month filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission to build, launch and operate a Ka-band satellite.

The application is pending before the FCC. The company targets a launch for July 1999, and service rollout that November. It would cost $292.5 million to build and launch the satellite, company officials said.

CAI Wireless formed the subsidiary earlier this year to pursue the Ka-band satellite service. The company expects to use it to complement CAI Wireless's multichannel, multipoint distribution system spectrum. Potential uses include two-way video, voice and data transmission.

CAI expects to use the satellite capacity to support its MMDS spectrum primarily to deliver two-way, interregion data services and non-subscription video services such as videoconferencing.

Company officials said they are attempting to secure the satellite position made available when AT&T Corp. withdrew its application in May.

"These are the only two unassigned Ka-band orbital locations capable of providing service to the entire United States,'' said Timothy Santora, president of CAI Data Systems.

The company expects to finance the project by issuing debt and equity securities in CAI Data Systems. The subsidiary to date has been financed by CAI Wireless.

CAI Wireless also is negotiating with TelQuest Communications Inc., a company controlled by Jared Abbruzzese, chairman of CAI Wireless, for satellite capacity in the C-band and Ku-band, for its anticipated launch of a digital MMDS subscription video service in Boston and potentially other CAI markets.

The Albany-based CAI operates an analog-based wireless video system here and in five other markets. The company launched high-speed Internet access here and has expanded it to New York City.

Ka-band operates at a frequency range of 27 GHz to 40 GHz. C-Band operates between 4000 MHz and 8000 MHz and is widely used for television programming. Ku-band is in the 12 GHz to 18 GHz range and is used for direct-to -home television broadcasting, satellite news-gathering and business communications.
