Dale, I can support your position from personal experience with the
manufacturing of computer systems. The serialization of a machine
can be influenced by a number of issues or strategies. First, due to
safety issues a manufacturer has to be able to have some ability to
track down where their machines are so for instance, some computer
systems using a seven digit serial number will use the first two
digits to identify the country. So 51XXXXX means machines shipped
from the US to France. Also, when multiple manufacturing facilities
are involved one digit will identify the plant of manufacture and two
or three other digits the country of install. So you cant tell a
thing from a serial number unless you know the manufacturer's strategy
and serialization methodology.
