PARIS, March 13 (Reuters) - Generale des Eaux
subsidiary Cegetel said on Friday it had 100,000 subscribers as
of March 12 for a fixed-line telephone service that it has set
up since the opening up of the French telecoms market.
Cegetel launched the service on January 30 and it said it
was now available in three French regions: the wider Paris area
region Ile de France, northern Nord-Pas de Calais region, and
the central Rhone and Auvergne region.
Generale des Eaux chairman Jean-Marie Messier said on
January 30 that Cegetel had forecast 500,000 residential
subscribers and 100,000 professional subscribers for the end of
1998, but he added this target would be overshot.
Cegetel is majority-owned by Generale des Eaux and also has
Mannesmann , British Telecom and SBC
Communications Inc as shareholders.
