>>I want to add a new rule to the contest. Double Down. I want to double the points at risk and cost average my basis with the close today on THQI!! What do you think?<<

Thats how I lost my pants last year. I was only out a shirt the first time around.

Dale: glad you mentioned it....I had considered proposing the same
thing for the contest....and while I'm at it there were a couple of
other tinkers I wanted to propose...so here they are for everyone to
comment on...I am not married to any of these, just throwing them out
for consideration...

1. A player may average down one time after his initial trade but only
if his initial trade is already down at least 3% (just chosen
arbitrarily) as of the open or close immediately following his initial
selection. Thus, if someone has bought at the open on Monday, they
could not average down until the open on Tuesday, which would be the
first open following the first close after the position selection. A
person averaging down that remains negative loses two points, rather
than just one. The positive points are not effected...

2. I propose tinkering with the points just a little:

Current Proposed

0-5% = 1 point 0% = 0 points

.001% to 4.999% = 1 point

>5% = 3 points 5.00% to 9.999% = 3 points

>10% = 5 points 10.00% + = 5 points

The effect of these proposed changes is to give 0 points for a 0%
return....more like the real world...lots of us (myself included,
twice) have gotten 1 point for a 0% move...we don't gain in the real
world at 0%, and probably shouldn't here either. The second change is
just tinkering so that 5.00, rather than 5.01%, = 3 points. As far as
I know, I am the only one that this has effected...many weeks ago had
exactly 5.00% and got 1 point. (Personally, I figured the 1 point for
the 0's made up for it and the +2 I have gotten for the 0's washed
with the 1 rather than 3 for 5.00%....)

I had hesitated proposing these tinkers out of fear that they would
create a move, desire, or invitation to tinker with the fundamental
simplicity of our game. Yeah, I know the averaging down does that
somewhat, but it gives the NSF's of the week an opportunity to get
positive while making them be at greater risk as well. Since the only
gain is to be positive for normal points, it will keep everyone from
doing it every week....

These are just suggestions.....they will not be implemented unless the
overwhelming majority agrees....substantial dissent (and not
necessarily majority) from any proposal will kill it....I would rather
leave the game unchanged than tinker in a way that would create any
problems among the group. Rudy devised a game that is fun precisely
because it is simple....I would rather do nothing than risk that.

Questions, comments, suggestions?????

Troy

PS - this weeks results to follow....I got stuck out-of-town Thursday
and Friday...
