Alydaar emerges from 'start-up phase'
Investors anticipate company's first profitable quarter

WEST CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS.MW) -- Shares in Alydaar Software (ALYD) have climbed more than 20 percent during the past two trading sessions as investors anticipate the release of the company's first profitable quarter, analysts said.
The Year 2000 company, which lost a total of 51 cents per share in the first three quarters of last year, is set to announce results next week.

"The company is emerging out of its start-up phase," said Otto Grote, analyst at New York City's Derby Securities. He declined to reveal his first quarter earnings projection, saying only the company would turn a profit. A consensus estimate from analysts was not available.

ÿ
ÿThe company has increased sales from $38,000 in 1996 to $11 million in 1997 and says its comfortable with 1998 revenue projections of $75 million.
West Charlotte, N.C.-based Alydaar has indicated it booked $6.5 million in fourth-quarter sales, a 283 percent increase over the third-quarter level.

The fourth-quarter sales brings total revenue for the year to about $11 million, up from just $38,000 in 1996. This year, sales are expected to be about seven times higher, at $75 million.

Alydaar, named after the famed race horse, is riding a wave of business associated with a computer's inability to read the first two numbers of the date of a year. With the coming change of millennium, many computers will freeze up and systems will crash because they will mistakenly interpret "2000" as "1900".

Cost estimates for smashing the "millennium bug" range from a few hundred million dollars up to $600 billion. Businesses looking to iron out the Year 2000 glitches typically use a combination of software applications, or "tools", and human labor.

Alydaar supplies a tool that switches updates the first two numbers of the year in a software program's datefield. The company has a partnership with Compuware (CPWR), which provides testing for the fix.

Shares in Compuware have tripled over the past year, while many other Year 2000 companies have also seen substantial rises in stock prices. Service-oriented players Keane (KEA), Ciber (CBR), Computer Horizons (CHRZ) have all more than doubled.

Derby Securities' Grote said he expected Alydaar to enjoy strong sales in Europe, where it can charge two to three times more for work than in the U.S.

Shares added 1 7/16 to 18 1/8 on Thursday, after a 14-percent advance in the previous session. Volume during the week has been nearly three times heavier than average.
