NORTEL, CISCO REACH AGREEMENT FOLLOWING NETSPEED BUY -- From Research Triangle Park, N.C. today, Nortel said it has agreed to transfer its equity position in NetSpeed Inc. to Cisco Systems, Inc. (Cisco), as part of Cisco's acquisition of the Austin, Tex.-based data networking company, subject to various closing conditions, including approval under the Hart Scott Rodino Anti-Trust and Improvements Act. Nortel and Cisco signed a letter of agreement to extend Nortel's existing OEM agreement with NetSpeed for distribution of DSL-related products. The letter also covers: Cisco endorsing Nortel's "DSL-Lite" technology, including Nortel's multi-megabit modem specification; Nortel endorsing Cisco's PPP over ATM protocol specification; and Nortel and Cisco intention to collaborate on high-speed access standards efforts. The agreement is part of Cisco's "commitment to deliver broadband access to the residential marketplace," said Kevin Kennedy, VP/GM of Cisco's Network-to-User business unit. Nortel: 919 992-7851.
