Gee, Tom, Terrence and I were talking with and about a FISH, for goodness sake. Usually when I post to creatures that swim in the sea, I am full of gentle laughter and good fun, imagining them trying to type with their flippers and everything. If Smells Like Tuna is somehow offended, I am sure he will let me know. But really, it was just a joke. Pagans and atheists are no more disrespectful and irreverent than any other people are, I don't think. We are all individuals. Father Terrence is a religious figure in his own right, and speaks from his own pulpit. I have asked that everyone stay polite. But I am horrified when groups of homophobic suburban teenagers come into San Francisco and beat gay men into pulp with baseball bats, for example. Is that not disrespect as well? If a group of conservative Christians is going to assert that because of their belief system homosexuals should be discriminated against in this country, then certainly people who do not believe that way are entitled to ask valid questions about their beliefs. If, on the other hand, the Christians believed that the moon was made of cream cheese and Smells Like Tuna was actually Jesus, I am sure all of the pagans and atheists and people who are concerned with the human and civil rights of homosexuals would say Great!! Whatever!! and give them complete freedom to practice their religious beliefs, as long as they were not harmful to people who did not believe that way, and there was plenty of cream cheese left over for everyone else, because heathens really love bagels and stuff. But in this case, people are living miserable lives, being harassed, and dying because of the conservative Christian belief system, and that seems somehow unfair to some of us. Christine
