Having been a gold bug for a couple of years, I am still hopeful for the great bull run. However, I realized about six months ago that I could be both a short-term (technical) and long-term (fundamental) investor. I own the physical metal and would never think of selling any based on short-term market fluctuations (It helps me sleep better at night). However, I have found that, for me at least, short to medium term trades in gold stocks have been more profitable recently than buying and holding. Of course, there will be much more money to be made in a long-term bull market, so I hope to see one soon.
