Router Alternative? -- Cisco switches to Layer 3 with 8500 rollout

San Jose, Calif. -- Cisco Systems Inc. is preparing to respond to
market pressure with a "Layer 3" product rollout that could cut into
the company's lucrative router sales, said sources close to Cisco.

"Traditional routers can cost 40 times as much money as Layer 3
switches," said Jeff Wilson, senior analyst at Infonetics Research
Inc., San Jose. "Their [respective] feature sets aren't especially
comparable, but in situations where you only have to route IP or IPX,
Layer 3 switches are typically more than adequate."

Prominent Layer 3 switch offerings include 3Com's CoreBuilder 3500
and 9000 switches as well as Bay Networks' Accelar product line.

Hmmmm, heads, and 3COM takes sales away from CSCO with Layer 3.
Tails, CSCO takes its own sales away with switches that cost one
fourtieth of their routers. MUST be getting close to time to short
CSCO.
