WINNIPEG (Dow Jones)--Air Canada (ACNAF) said it is planning a major expansion of its Winnipeg customer service call center which will create 500 jobs over the next three years.

In a news release, Air Canada said the expansion is a joint venture with the Call Centre Initiative of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg. It said the Manitoba government will provide a C$3.5 million forgivable loan for start-up and training costs, through the Manitoba Industrial Opportunities Program. The total cost of the expansion wasn't specified.

The airline said the new call center will open this fall in the renovated Winnipeg Free Press building.

Air Canada said it has had a surge in demand for telephone reservations services and frequent flyer services, and an expanded call center will allow it to provide increased levels of customer service and supplemental services such as electronic ticketing.

It said Air Canada's existing 200 call-center employees in Winnipeg will move to the new 70,000-square-foot building.

Air Canada is a major Canadian air carrier.
