Server NIC battles begin -- 3Com, Intel Ignite Server War

Santa Clara, Calif.-Thefirst shots were fired last week in an undeclared war for
server supremacy, and neither combatant is a major server systems vendor.
The hostilities started by 3Com Corp. and Intel Corp.'s networking division
revolve around a key piece of real estate in the back of the server-the network
interface card slot.

3Com introduced three new server NICs: the Fast EtherLink Server NIC, the
Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC and the Token Ring-in-Fast Ethernet Server
NIC.

Intel announced its EtherExpress PRO/100+ Server Adapter, as well as
software enhancements to its EtherExpress PRO/100 Intelligent Server
Adapter.

All 3Com NICs are currently available. 3Com's Fast EtherLink Server NIC
ranges from $190 to $199 depending on volume. The Gigabit EtherLink Server
NIC ranges from $1,610 to $1,695. Token Ring-in-Fast Ethernet Server NIC
will retail for $249 for single units.

Intel's EtherExpress PRO/100+ Server Adapter will ship in April at the
suggested list price of $119 in single packs. The EtherExpress PRO/100
Intelligent Server Adapter is currently available with the new software upgrade
at a suggested list price of $399.

Mang, the Warren Buffet report is posted at:

berkshirehathaway.com

Interesting reading, though long and pretty detailed. In my first scan of it I didn't see any general observations of overall market being overbought as stated last year and which caused a slight dip upon its release. Just some particular comments about GEICO and some of the other businesses not expecting the same results as a year ago. A good read for anyone with the time though.
