If you want to see a biotech stock where the great future ia already in the stock price take a look at Sepracor (SEPR). In my opinion Ligand at $16 is still selling at a serious discount to its true value. That alone of course does not prevent the stock from going to a even bigger discount. But it considerably limits the risk of holding the stock for long term investors.

One way to look at biotech stocks is that they are really long-term LEAP call options w/ a distant expiration date (the date when the cash finally burn off to zilch). In other words, like options, they are wasting assets until they go "in the money"--when FDA approves marketing of their chemical concoctions.

As such, it's prolly wise not to choke on too much of this stuff.
