[Ten] GamePad Play-off, March pc GAMING WORLD (UK). Microsoft Sidewinder ***** ThrustMaster RAGE 3D **** Air Labs Mirage *** Phase 9 Phantom 2 Plus *** PC Powerpad Pro *** T-Leader 3D *** Gravis GamePad Pro ** Competition Pro *** Sight FIghter DIgital *** Logitech ThunderPad ** Categories rated: Platform Game Performance, Beat 'em ups, Sports, Robustness and Overall. Microsoft SideWinder GamePad 5-stars in all categories except for Sports where it received 3-stars. ThrustMaster Rage 3D received 5-stars (highest) for Sports.Rage 3D "...in the 3D mode the arrangement was particularly good for sports games - for aftertouch in games like Sensible Soccer or Actua Soccer 2 it is hard to beat...and the support software was by some way the best of all the products we tested..." The Gravis GamePad Pro was, until recently, the #1 gamepad in marketshare in the world. This, their latest gamepad, now out for appx two? years, received only one star for the Platform Games, Beat 'em ups and Sports categories...TMSR is doing its job in this respect. ...and right in the middle of the ten gamepad review was an effective and compelling Rage 3D full-page ad...our only negative is TMSRs failure to have their 5-star reviews prominently affixed to Rage 3D packaging and ad(s) [for their existing/prospective user base]...a textbook and distinct competitive advantage, superior brand equity, perceived value...think about the lost opportunity costs incl all [first-time, unsophisticated...] prospective and 2nd,3rd-time purchasers whom will never know TMSR Rage 3D is rated #1 by its industry gaming gurus, against the competitive products said consumer is looking at during their buying decision!?...again, it's these inconsistencies which differentiate the mere good from unequivocal excellence... © 1998 pc GAMING WORLD zdnet.com
