HP system I bought from CompUSA less than 3 weeks ago:

200 mghz MMX Intel process
32 MRAM
2.1 gig hard drive
56K flex modem
20X CD rom
floppy drive
multimedia package (sound and video card, speakers, etc)
Windows 95
Games on CD rom
small desktop configuration
1 yr warranty parts and labor

$799 w/o monitor...15 inch SVGA $200 w/rebate

they dont sell this anymore..they now sell the 233Mhz processor, more hard drive memory and faster CD ROM...I have been devalued

BTW CPQ sub 1000 model was not better value and did not meet HP's offering...now this week they look to be on parity

I am also typically a mid to high end buyer...but the value overwhelmed me...I really dont need a Pentium II

CHEAP!

cheers

<Could someone define a sub-$1000 dollar computer. (Including software)?

Good question. Short of going to ?? not much here on this island, I have no idea.
